About John Rider

MSgt John Rider, tuba; MSgt John Garcia, euphonium, TSgt Mark Barnette, tuba; are all members of the Air Force Band of the West. They are stationed at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas. MSgt John Rider, a graduate with two degrees from the University of North Texas, has been a part of the military since 1992, after he joined the Air National Guard Band of the Southwest in Fort Worth, Texas. He entered active duty in 1998 and has been stationed in Ohio, Alaska, and Texas. MSgt John Garcia, a graduate of Alderson-Broaddus College and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, joined the Air Force in 2000 and has been stationed in Massachusetts, Virginia, and Texas. TSgt Mark Barnette joined the Air Force in 1998, after graduating from Oberlin College Conservatory and Rice University. He has been stationed in Nebraska and Texas. These three Airmen represent a combined 61 years of experience with military bands.


"What to Expect After Winning a Military Band Audition and How to Keep Your New Job". Their goal is to provide information and insight to those who are interested in performing in a military band. Areas of focus will be physical expectations, non-playing duties, and managing job expectations. These three Airmen represent over 60 years of experience, including deployments, overseas assignments, and performing on multiple instruments.
