About Matt Hightower

Dr. Matt Hightower is Assistant Professor of Tuba/Euphonium at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Prior to teaching at TAMU-K, Hightower held positions at Murray State University and The University of Texas at Austin, respectively.

Some of Dr. Hightower’s accolades as an ensemble performer include appearances with the Bloomington Camerata Orchestra, The Columbus (IN) Symphony, The Evansville Philharmonic, The Jackson Symphony (TN), The Victoria Symphony (TX), and David Baker’s 20th Century BeBop Band. As a soloist, Dr. Hightower has performed at universities across the United States.

In addition to performing, Dr. Hightower is an award winning composer. In 2010 Dr. Hightower was named the winner of the KMEA Intercollegiate Composition Contest. Recent performances of Dr. Hightower’s work include the premier of his “Concerto for Tuba” by Nimrod Ron, Principal Tuba of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, an arrangement performed by the low brass section of the Brass Band of Battle Creek, and "The Slide Advantage," premiered by the TAMUK Trombone Choir at the 2016 Texas Music Educators Association Convention. As a composer for Fannin Musical Productions, Dr. Hightower composes and arranges music for high school bands across the country.

Dr. Hightower’s primary tuba teachers include Ray Conklin, Daniel Perantoni, and Charles Villarrubia. Dr. Hightower has also studied composition with Mike D’Ambrosio, John Fannin, and P.Q. Phan.
